Travel & Destinations brings together photographs made across twenty-five years of Stavros Marmaras’ photographic career. The collection combines personal passion projects, self-directed journeys and commissioned assignments, creating a visual archive shaped by curiosity, professional experience and a lasting interest in how places reveal themselves through light.

The photographs move through coastlines, mountains, forests, cultural landmarks, ports, cities and quieter observations encountered along the way. Rather than functioning as a conventional travel itinerary, the collection studies the character of place: the relationship between landscape and architecture, the rhythm of arrival, the influence of weather and the human traces that give a destination its identity.

01 / Built memory

Architecture gives travel a physical memory. Domes, churches, monuments, fortifications, bridges and streets reveal how belief, defence, craft and civic life become part of a landscape. This chapter moves from golden towers and a Gothic cathedral to the pyramids at Giza, Egypt, coastal forts and a chapel embedded in a green mountainside. The photographs do not attempt to catalogue every structure. They look instead at how built form gathers meaning through its setting, how a route approaches a landmark and how scale changes when architecture is seen as part of a wider territory.

02 / Inland light

Mountain and forest photography begins with changing conditions. Cloud can erase distance, snow can simplify a ridge and reflected light can turn water into a second horizon. This chapter moves through the Ardennes forest, the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia, mountain landscapes in Chile, the French Alps and Lake Gunn in New Zealand. Alpine villages, rivers, ice, woodland and autumn valleys extend the sequence without assigning unverified locations. Across the chapter, paths, slopes, watercourses and weather become the visual structure, revealing wild terrain through scale, atmosphere and the patient observation of light.

03 / Open water

Coastlines are never visually still. Tides, surf, cloud and reflected colour continually redraw the boundary between land and water. These photographs range from a small islet in the Cook Islands to tropical beaches, rocky shores, quiet coves, boardwalks, cliffs and open sea at sunset. Human elements appear sparingly: a white table facing blue water, a fence following the sand, a chapel above a steep coast or a sailboat crossing the final light. The chapter treats the horizon not as an ending but as an organising line, giving each image calm, direction and a sense of distance.

04 / Passage

A destination is also an infrastructure of arrival. Cruise ships, harbours, waterfront buildings, urban beaches and resort paths show how people meet a coastline and move through it. This final chapter pairs broad views with smaller observations: a helicopter beside a ship, salt mounds reflected in shallow water, flamingos feeding in a lagoon, a bird resting above a pond and a waterfall enclosed by tropical foliage. These are not presented as a travel itinerary. They form a visual study of access, leisure, ecology and scale, connecting the recognisable signs of a destination with the quieter details that make the experience specific.
