PROJECT STORY
Vaulted interiors, cliffside terraces and the changing light of Santorini.
The brief
I photographed Boutique Hotel Fira in Santorini for Engel & Völkers Real Estate in Greece. Set on the island’s cliffside in the Cyclades, the hotel combines white vaulted interiors, layered terraces and a swimming pool with wide views across the Aegean Sea. The setting is central to its character, particularly as the light moves towards sunset. My aim was to present the property through both its architecture and its atmosphere: to make the spaces understandable while retaining the sense of looking out from the cliff above the water.
The photographic challenge
The terraces follow the slope, with stairs, stone walls and white architectural forms connecting different levels. A single broad view can convey the sea outlook, but it cannot fully explain how the rooms, outdoor seating and pool relate to one another. The sequence needed to balance an understanding of the property with the openness of its surroundings.
The light presents another contrast. Bright pool water and the sea sit beyond shaded arches, while the interiors are defined by softly curved walls and pale surfaces. I wanted to preserve the shape and texture of these spaces without losing the views through open doors and windows. Controlled perspective and a careful balance of interior and exterior light kept the architecture clear throughout.
My approach
The opening photograph places the viewer on the terrace at blue hour. A marble-topped dining table, timber chairs and candle lanterns sit against the sea and the illuminated buildings along the cliff. It introduces the evening atmosphere before the daylight photographs describe the property more closely.
Views along the terrace establish the relationship between the hotel and the caldera. Around the pool, wider compositions bring together the white arches, dark stone walls and outdoor seating. A lower viewpoint across the water emphasizes the pool’s proximity to the architecture, while a view through an arch connects the shaded lounge with the blue water beyond.
The aerial photographs provide a complementary reading of the site. A frontal view shows the stepped facade, shutters, stairs and pool level. From above, the terraces and pebble-patterned paving become easier to follow, giving context to the more intimate photographs made within the property.
Inside, I followed the curves of the vaulted ceilings and the transitions between rooms. Built-in seating, timber furniture and pale grey kitchens give the suites a quiet, individual character. Open doorways retain the connection with the sea, while bedroom photographs concentrate on proportion, light and the restrained arrangement of furnishings. The fitness room and stone-arched hot tub add further detail to the presentation.
The final part of the collection returns to the changing light outside. Sunset is framed by the terrace arch, then opens into a wider view of the caldera. As evening deepens, the pool glows turquoise and warm light reveals the vaulted lounge through its arches. These photographs bring a different atmosphere to spaces already established in daylight.
The result
The 28-photograph collection presents Boutique Hotel Fira through its interiors, pool, terraces and cliffside setting, with aerial views completing the spatial account. For Engel & Völkers Real Estate in Greece, the photographs bring architectural clarity together with the sea views and evening atmosphere that distinguish the property in Santorini.
