Intermezzo

The photographic challenge

Intermezzo's vaulted ceilings and arched recesses are part of its identity, alongside a rich collection of furnishings and decorative pieces. My concern is to give the curves enough space in the composition without making the rooms feel empty, and to include the details without losing the layout. White textured surfaces, blue upholstery and pale green accents need a consistent treatment of light and colour across the series.

My approach

I introduce Intermezzo through the courtyard entrance. The white pergola, flowing curtains and two dark pots establish a clear arrangement before the collection moves indoors. They also connect the accommodation to its outdoor space in Santorini, in the Cyclades.

In the rooms, broader views explain how the sitting, dining and sleeping areas meet. The curved ceilings remain visible above the furniture, with chandeliers, draped windows and arched openings providing a different rhythm from a rectangular interior. I use those forms to guide the eye through the photograph rather than crowding them into its edges.

The kitchenette and dining nook show a smaller scale of the same design. White lattice-front cabinetry and pale blue chairs keep the furnishings connected to the surrounding surfaces. In the sleeping areas, the blue cushions, canopies and paired lamps give the rooms a more intimate character. Opposing views make the connections to adjoining spaces understandable.

Selected details of patterned cushions, framed prints and candlesticks give time to the decorative choices. They sit alongside the wider compositions, so the viewer can place them within the interior.

Outside, I return to the facade, courtyard dining table and blue doors. Stone inserts, planting and the staircase with its rope handrail add texture to the white surfaces. These photographs complete the transition between the interior and the courtyard rather than presenting the outdoor area as an unrelated amenity.

The result

For a boutique accommodation, individuality often lies in the smaller decisions as much as in the overall room. This collection brings both together. My architectural and interior approach to hospitality photography keeps Intermezzo's spaces legible while allowing the colour, curves and furnishings to carry its character. It offers owners and managers a consistent photographic account of this Santorini property, with room views and details serving different parts of the presentation.
