THE APPROACH
Architecture, light and a sense of place.
The Estée Lauder beauty space at Hondos Center in Glyfada, Athens, brings together product presentation, illuminated displays and a distinctive navy-and-gold palette. In this six-photograph series, I show the space at different scales: from a balanced view of the main counters to closer compositions of cosmetics, shelving and brand details. The sequence connects the overall interior with the individual elements that give it its character.
A retail interior shaped by brand identity
The opening photograph presents the main beauty area frontally. Two gold-toned display structures frame the central counter, while the illuminated Estée Lauder lettering establishes the identity of the space. Pale flooring and light countertops sit against deep blue surfaces, creating a clear contrast between the products, the furniture and their surroundings. The central stools and mirrors also reveal how the counters are arranged for product exploration and consultation.
Angled views introduce a different reading of the interior. They show the depth between the foreground displays and the rear shelving, making the relationships between the counters easier to understand. Repeated vertical lines, mirrored panels and gold-toned edges link the different parts of the space. These views retain the visual richness of the finishes while giving the eye a clear route through a densely detailed retail setting.
Photographing light, surfaces and product displays
Lighting is a defining part of this beauty hall interior. Bright display panels, illuminated signage and warm light beneath the counters draw attention to different product areas. Glossy navy finishes and mirrored surfaces introduce reflections, while the pale counters provide a quieter background for the cosmetics. The photographs show these contrasts together, preserving the atmosphere of the space alongside the structure of its retail displays.
The closer view of the makeup display shifts the emphasis from the room to its merchandising. Rows of foundation bottles, lipsticks and palettes form an ordered composition beneath a large illuminated product image. Seen alongside the wider photographs, this frame shows how small-scale presentation contributes to the overall impression of the interior. It also gives the series a useful change of pace, moving from spatial relationships to colour, repetition and detail.
A complete view of the beauty environment
The final photograph places the Estée Lauder displays within a broader beauty hall setting. A central fragrance counter and tall display column occupy the foreground, with branded shelving extending along the wall behind. This wider context adds another layer to the series: the relationship between an individual brand presence and the surrounding department-store interior.
For architects, retail designers and beauty brands, photographs of this kind can communicate both a store’s design language and the way products are presented within it. An overall view explains the space; closer frames make its materials, lighting and visual identity more tangible. Bringing those views together creates a coherent record that can support portfolios, presentations and commercial communication.
