PROJECT STORY
Stone arches, intimate courtyards and a home within medieval Monemvasia.
The brief
I photographed Castle Residence in Monemvasia for Engel & Völkers Real Estate in Greece. In the southeastern Peloponnese, the residence takes its name from its setting within the medieval fortress town. Stone courtyards, vaulted rooms and terraces overlooking the sea give the property a character closely connected to its surroundings. Its sunset views are another part of that appeal. My aim was to create a clear, considered presentation of the residence while retaining the warmth and individuality of a home within this distinctive architectural setting.
The photographic challenge
The residence reveals itself through a succession of smaller spaces. Exterior stairs connect the stone facades, arches frame adjoining rooms, and doorways open towards sheltered courtyards or the sea. The photographs needed to explain these relationships without making the spaces feel disconnected or losing their intimate scale.
Light also changes markedly across the property. Direct sun brings out the texture of the courtyard stone, while the vaulted bedrooms and interior passages have a softer, more enclosed atmosphere. Bright views through timber windows introduce a further contrast. I worked to balance interior and exterior light so that the outlook remained present and the materials retained their natural depth and colour.
My approach
The collection opens in the main courtyard. Stone walls, a curved stair parapet, terracotta pots and the circular pebble mosaic establish the residence’s material character. A wider terrace photograph places it against Monemvasia’s rock and fortress setting, giving context to the closer views that follow.
Within the courtyards, I concentrated on the relationship between architecture and daily life. A small table beneath the trellis, chairs beside a backgammon board, flowering plants and open timber doors bring a human scale to the stonework. Photographs from both sides of a doorway show how these outdoor spaces connect with the rooms inside.
The interior sequence follows those transitions. A yellow-covered dining table sits beside a broad stone arch; elsewhere, yellow kitchen cabinets and pale timber beams give a smaller room its own identity. In the library and adjoining bedroom, the arch becomes the organising feature. Views in both directions describe the connection between the book-lined room, the bed and the light entering through the timber windows.
The stone-vaulted bedroom and stairway call for a quieter approach. Here, the curve of the ceiling, the texture of the masonry and the terracotta steps carry the photographs. Upstairs, the living room opens towards the sea, combining a pitched timber roof, blue corner seating, books and a stone fireplace. The kitchen and dining view continues this relationship with the balcony beyond.
I kept the compositions attentive to proportion, perspective and the natural colour of the materials. The final terrace and rooftop views return the viewer to Monemvasia, placing the residence within the town rather than presenting it as an isolated property.
The result
The 22-photograph collection brings together Castle Residence’s courtyards, interiors and sea outlook. For Engel & Völkers Real Estate in Greece, it provides a coherent visual account of the property, showing both its spatial character and the atmosphere of living within Monemvasia’s medieval town.
